About this Scholarship

About This Scholarship

The Gates Cambridge Scholarship is one of the most prestigious international postgraduate awards in the world, funded by a $210 million endowment from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. It offers fully funded postgraduate study at the University of Cambridge — consistently ranked among the top five universities globally — to exceptional individuals from outside the United Kingdom. What distinguishes Gates Cambridge from other merit scholarships is its explicit emphasis on leadership character and a commitment to improving the lives of others, not academic achievement alone.

For Ghanaian scholars, the award represents a transformative opportunity. Past African recipients have gone on to lead government ministries, found technology companies, build influential NGOs, and contribute to cutting-edge research in public health, economics, and climate science. The Cambridge alumni network opens doors that remain closed to almost every other credential — and the Gates Cambridge Scholars Society creates a lifelong community of exceptionally driven individuals from over 100 countries.

The scholarship covers all tuition fees, a maintenance allowance, return airfare, and a substantial academic development budget — making it genuinely fully funded for the duration of the postgraduate program.

Tips for Ghanaian and African Applicants

  • Connect with Ghanaian Gates Cambridge alumni first: There is a small but growing community of Ghanaian Gates Cambridge scholars. Reaching out to them before writing your application will give you insight into what the selection committee actually looks for — and what previous Ghanaian applicants got right.
  • The personal statement is the entire application: Academic credentials will get you considered; the personal statement is what gets you selected. Write specifically about your work in Ghana, the problem you are trying to solve, and why Cambridge is the right next step — not just a prestigious one.
  • Leadership and community impact matter as much as grades: Demonstrated leadership in Ghana — whether in a startup, NGO, community project, or professional role — is central to the selection criteria. Generic academic achievements are not enough.
  • Apply simultaneously to the university and the scholarship: The Gates Cambridge application is made through the University of Cambridge's graduate admissions system. You must apply for both university admission and the scholarship at the same time.
  • Start 12 months early: Cambridge's application deadlines are earlier than most UK universities, and preparing a competitive Gates Cambridge application — including referee briefings, personal statement drafts, and research proposal — takes considerable time.
